If you are a fan of horror thrillers and giant snakes, you might be interested in watching Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood, the fourth installment in the Anaconda film series. This TV movie, directed by Don E. FauntLeRoy and starring Crystal Allen, Linden Ashby, Danny Midwinter, and John Rhys-Davies, premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel on February 28, 2009. It is a sequel to Anaconda 3: Offspring (2008) and follows the story of a genetically created anaconda that regenerates itself into two aggressive giant snakes, due to the Blood Orchid.

The Plot

The movie begins with Peter Reysner, a scientist who creates a serum for cell regeneration using the blood orchids from Borneo and a baby anaconda captured at the end of the previous film. He burns the snake after testing the serum on it, but it escapes from the cage and kills him in a mine filled with blood orchids. Peter J.D. Murdoch, a billionaire suffering from bone cancer, sends his assassin Eugene and his team of henchmen mercenaries to find Peter and the serum so that it can cure him. He also tells them to be careful of Dr. Amanda Hayes, the sole survivor of the previous snake attack, and kill her if needed.

Dr. Amanda Hayes, determined to destroy the serum and kill the snake, goes in search of Peter with two officers. On the way, they meet Alex, a trekker who appears lost in the Romanian Carpathians, while doing a paleopathology project. When they discover the blood orchids in the mine, Amanda sets the explosives to destroy them, but they are attacked by the anaconda that kills one of the officers while the other officer hides and disappears. Amanda tricks the snake into causing a cave-in that kills it but she is knocked unconscious and Alex escapes to get more help.

Meanwhile, a group of explorers: Jackson, girlfriend Wendy, Wendys best friend Heather, and brothers Patrick and Scott, get dragged into the search for the snake. Due to the serum, the anaconda can no longer die without significant damage to its internal organs and regenerates itself from the previous cave-in. Heather falls ill due to a spider bite. The group encounters Eugenes team and they join forces to find Murdochs helicopter. However, they are soon attacked by two anacondas that have split from one due to regeneration. The snakes kill most of them except for Jackson, Wendy, Amanda (who wakes up and finds them), Alex (who returns with help), and Eugene (who escapes with some serum samples). The survivors manage to reach Murdochs helicopter but he refuses to let them in unless they give him the serum. Eugene arrives and shoots Murdoch but he is killed by one of the snakes. Amanda throws the serum samples into a fire and sets off an explosion that kills Murdoch and one of the snakes. The other snake attacks the helicopter but Amanda shoots it in its vital organ with a flare gun and kills it for good.

The Review

Anaconda 4: Trail of Blood is not a masterpiece by any means. It has many flaws such as poor CGI effects, cheesy dialogue, clichéd characters, illogical plot twists, and lack of originality. The acting is mediocre at best and some scenes are unintentionally funny or boring. The movie does not offer much suspense or scares as the snakes are not very convincing or menacing. The movie also does not explain how the blood orchids work or why they cause regeneration in anacondas but not in humans.

However, if you are looking for some mindless entertainment and enjoy watching giant snakes devouring people, you might find some enjoyment in this movie. The movie has some action scenes that are decently choreographed and some gore effects that are gruesome enough for horror fans. The movie also has some continuity with the previous film as it brings back Crystal Allen as Amanda Hayes and John Rhys-Davies as Murdoch.
